Career in Software Testing. Is it a good field to choose?
Hello Friends,
Iam Sundar. I have completed BE in Computer Science. I want to choose my career in Software testing. But Iam not sure about the field in Software testing. Please guide me how the career in Testing will be? Wat are the Career growth in this? Can testing be seriously taken as one's career? If yes how to start? Will Tester not have that respect as of a Developer? Hope you will help in choosing career for so many who have similar doubts in their mind....

Re: Career in Software Testing
Sundar,
In terms of career growth, both dev and testing are almost same. Initially it may look like growth in testing is less. But as time passes, you will realize it is not true. Testing is relatively new area/profession in software development and every company has started realizing its importance and this field is growing much faster than development segment. If anyone says testers are not valued as much as developers, then I will say they don't have realization of what testing is and its importance. But typically what should drive you in taking decision is, can you do repititive jobs? testing is doing same thing again and again (with almost no or minor changes...). Also testing profession demands lot of patience. Do you have it in you? Or will a challenging work which demands your full mental efforts will satisfy you? The other major factor is, if you go into development roles, you can always make a move into testing where as, vice-versa is not possible. So take a decision based on your long term professinal goals (ofcourse I can understand that, for a fresher realizing his own long term goals is not a simply thing) and what kind of work you would prefer to do. Thanks, Krishna

Sundar,
You can always send me private message in this forum and I will be more than happy to reply your message. But I will always encourage people to post your doubts in this forum (unless you have something personal) as every mind will have its own way of looking into issues and responding. Thus the probability of getting better replies is more. Thanks, Krishna

Re: Career in Software Testing
Sundar,
Before suggesting whether you leave current job or not, I would like to know answers to few questions. What is your current job? How much you are earning in this job? How many days you can survice without job? Even though these questions may look silly, answers to these questions are very important. Because our decisions should not be proved costly in future. Because, searching for job is not a time bounded activity. For some it may take couple of months and for some it may take a year also. Getting job is not solely dependent on your knowledge levels. To some extent it also depends on your luck (factors which we can't control). But for now, I will suggest you to manage time better. In general everyone says "I don't have time". But, at the end of the day take a paper and write down in hourly basis about activities you have done that day. You will come to know how you are spending time. Do the same activity for 2 weeks and you will know how to optimize time management to get more time for other things. Not to forget, this optimization should also have some time for yourself to relax and enjoy. But you have to balance the time you spend on that areas. Thanks, Krishna
