1. These are the numbers that are the first five terms ofa series that add upto 150. Can you name five terms of another series without fractions that add upto 153? 10, 20, 30; 40, 50 2. Is a 'size 16' knitting needle twice as thick as a 'size 8' knitting needle? 3. I opened my mail box this morning. What do I see in it? A chain letter. This seems to turn up every now and then in one form or another. I began to wonder. If one person sends a certain letter to two friends, asking each of them to copy the letter and send it to two of their friends, those in turn each send two letters to two of their friends and so on how many letters would have been sent by the time the letter did thirty sets. I calculated and I had a surprise waiting for me. The answer was gigantic. What do you think the answer was? 4.We have a 100 m piece of ribbon. If it takes one second to cut it into a 1 m strip how long would it take to cut the entire ribbon into metre strips? 5.When I was a little girl, one day my mother had left a bowl of goosebernes to be shared between my two sisters Lalitha, Vasantha and myself. I went home first. I ate what I thought was my share of gooseberries and left Then Lalitha arrived. She thought she was the first one to arrive and ate the number of gooseberries, she thought was her share and left. Lastly Vasantha arrived. She again thought she was the first one to arrive and she took what she thought was her share and left 8 gooseberries in the bowl. When we three sisters met in the evening we realized what had happened and my mother distributed the remaining 8 gooseberries in a fair share. How did my mother do it?

at 1st stage 2 letters are sent at 2nd stage, 2^2 = 4 letters are sent ....... ....... ....... ....... at 30 th stage, 2^30 letters are sent(outgoing mail = 2^30) so total letter sent = 2+4+8+16+32..... total terms = 30 (1 to 30 powers) sum ofGP with r=2 is 2(2^30-1)/(2-1) = 2^31-2 i hope i am correct! ============================================ 5. arre! apne bataya nahi aapke mummy ka naam shakuntla devi hai!!!.....just kidding..... let total candies = x i took = x/3 ; left = 2x/3 then lalitha took 2x/9; left = 4x/9 then vasantha took 4x/27; left = 8x/27 8x/27 = 8 x = 27 i took 9; lali(ahe is my sis after all, so her new nick) took 6 and vashi took 4. So, shaku will now give 3 to lali and 5 to vashi and all will have 9 candies. after that, ibeat both lali and vashi and took back all thier candies. so i have now 27 candies(3 in my huge bellly) and vashi and lali has zero each |
