Puzzle Contest-141
A creeper plant is climbing up and around a cylindrical tree trunk in a helical manner. The tree trunk has a height of 240 inches and a circumference of 32 inches. If the creeper covers a vertical distance of 60 inches in one complete twist around the tree trunk, what is the total length of the creeper?

Re: Puzzle Contest-141
The above answer is wrong.
For one complete twist, length of the creeper is not 32. It is sqrt(32^2+60^2) = 68. (using pythagorus theorem, after 'opening' and unrolling the cylindrical trunk) So, answer is 68*4 |

Re: Puzzle Contest-141
HAI smileey ur approach. is good....but ur answer is correct ,only half the way... but rest goes on like this... the base of the pythagorus traingle.. takes the diameter of the cylinder then it becomes...dia*pi.=32....so the diameter becomes 10.19
hence now. length of creep for one twist becomes sqrt((10.19^2)+(60^2))=60.84 so length of complete creep is (4*60.84)=243.36.. so the answer is 243.36..... but clue for this i got from ur solution... only |

Re: Puzzle Contest-141
Hi Pavan,
Base for the triangle is circumference and not diameter of the tree because u have to 'unroll' the cylinder before applying Pythagoras theorem. |
