Why learn English

English is a Common Language. It is a common language used to convey thoughts, ideas and feelings across the world.

In Asia, there are many different languages and many different dialects. This is also true of many parts of other countries where people use many different languages and dialects. Therefore it is important to have a common language for all people so that communication is possible between different races of people.

For example, when you are in a foreign country(such as when you go on overseas trip or go for holiday tour to other countries), many times you are unable to speak a word of the native language there. You will sense a complete feeling of isolation and of being 'cut off' from everybody there. However, if you know English and the people also know English, then you will not feel so 'lost'. With English as a common language, you are able to converse with the native people in other countries, making communication possible and easier.

Apart from Chinese, more people in the world speak English than any other language. It is spoken in the most of North American continent, in Australia, New Zealand and Britain as well as in many other countries. In fact about 300 million people have Englislh as their national language. If it is used as the common language of the world, communication between the various countries would be easier.

English, too, is already a language commonly used by Asians nowadays. This is due to the fact that English speaking people had colonised and had been living there for over a century and doign so, they brought their language with them. Enlgish is now taught in Asian schools and today, many Asians have far better command of English than their European counterparts have of Asian languages.

The language of the twentieth century world is the language of science and technology. Often new words must be added to the language to keep up with modern inventions and developments. The list in the last ten years is endless. "Television", "Telestar","Penicillin" are just a few which illustrate new words for new inventions in many different spheres. Malay is composite language. In other words, it is composed of many different parts. It is, therefore, capable of assimilating new words to cover modern needs.

Nearly a billion of people speak Chinese, but the Chinese language is not used as a common language because chinese is composed of a series of 'characters' and symbols. It is very difficult for 'ordinary' foreigners to learn it. Therefore although Chinese is spoken by so many millions of people, it is not as suitable as a common language as English.

English is necessary at all levels of people, to be able to communicate thoughts, words, and ideas. Hence, learning English is important. To be able to do well in your studies and excel in the workforce, you need English too. With English, you are able to converse with people across the world, you are able to communicate with people on the internet (such as via messengers). English has bring us so much convenience in such a sense.
