Arrow THE URINARY SYSTEM

THE URINARY SYSTEM
a.k.a - The Genito-Urinary System

WHAT DOES THE URINARY SYSTEM DO?
The Urinary System is a filtering system. Just like you have an air filter in your home or an oil filter in your car, you have a filtering system in your body. The urinary system filters out excess fluid and other substances and biochemical goo from your bloodstream. Some fluid will get reabsorbed by your body but for the most part, the excess fluid is expelled as urine (fluid waste). If your body didn't expel the urine (waste), then you'd get sick, which is another Good reason to drink plenty of water to flush your body toilet.

HOW DOES THE URINARY SYSTEM WORK?
Your body continually makes chemical waste products that it can't use. It's not as if your body just makes chemical waste products for the heck of it. These waste products are a result of left-over chemical reactions that you body just doesn't need. For instance: Once you use your food-stuff, any waste is expelled from the body. The waste goes into your bloodstream, then passes into your kidneys where the excess fluid and chemical stuff your body can't use is filtered out. As your kidneys work, they perform this incredible balancing act to make sure that your blood is just the right combination -- not too thin or too thick, not too salty, or overloaded with excess vitamins and minerals or wastes made by other parts of the body.
The kidneys work as they do because they contain millions of infinitesimal filters. Hundreds of times a day the blood in your body gets filtered through these millions of filters and the liquid and wastes are removed. The wastes trickle down and collect in the center of your kidneys. Your kidneys are always working and the urine is always dripping down through tubes called the ureters into a stretchy pouch. This stretchy pouch is your bladder and it is the only tissue in the body that is made up of "transitional" tissue because it can stretch just like elastic and go back to its normal size. The bladder can stretch enough to hold a pint of urine.

HOW DOES THE URGE TO URINATE HAPPEN?
When your bladder becomes too full, it will send a message to your brain that you need to urinate and you'll start looking for a place to urinate. When the time and place are right, your brain will tell the muscles around your bladder to start squeezing and for the circle of muscles at the bottom of your bladder to open. Urine will exit through the urethral opening in your body.
JUST THE FACTS:
  • Kidney beans are the exact shape of your kidneys.
  • About 440 gallons of blood flow through the kidneys each and every day!
