PUZZLES:

1.A person gives a book for binding, but the binder cuts the book in such a way that he cuts away the numbers on the pages. So now the person sits down to write the page numbers. What he observes is that the book had 61 times 3’s. How many pages does the book contain?

Sol: The number 3 in only one time 3,13,23,30,31,32,34,35,36,37,38,39,43,53,63,73,83,93,


The number 3 in two times

33,133,133.

So up to 300 pages will come (61 times).

2.Jarius and Kylar are playing the game. If Jarius wins, then he wins twice as many games as Kylar. If Jarius loses, then Kylar wins as the same number of games that Jarius wins. How many do Jarius and Kylar play before this match?



Sol: Case (i): If Jarius wins,

J + 1 = 2K ------------------(1)

Case (ii): If Jarius lose,

K + 1 = J -------------------(2)

Solve these two equations,

You will get Jarius wins = 3 & Kylar wins = 2.

Ans: Jarius wins = 3 & Kylar wins = 2.

3.Two trains travel from NewYork to Washington and the travel takes 5 hours journey time. Trains leave from Washington for every hour and an half hour and the trains leave from NewYork every hour. If the train leaves from Washington, Then how many trains from NewYork cross this train on its way?

Sol: Let the current time is 6 AM. Then It will meet on its way



6 – 5 = 1AM.

6 + 5 = 11AM.

So the train will meet 2.30AM, 3AM, 3.30AM… 10.30AM.But it can’t meet 11AM train because that particular train is ready to start its journey in the station.



So totally 19 trains.

Ans: 19 trains.

4.A man travels a roller coaster. He says 1/3rd of the children are before me and 3/4th of the children behind me. How many of them are there?

Sol: Let the total number of children is ‘ X’.



[(X – 1) / 3] + [3(X - 1) / 4] = X

Solve the above equation and will get X = 13.

Ans: 13 Children

5. An artist has exactly seven paintings ---, T, U, V, W, X, Y, and Z -- from which she must choose exactly five to be in an exhibit. Any combination is acceptable provided it meets the following conditions:

* If T is chosen, X cannot be chosen

1) Clark and Jones are neighbours and they drive each other to work.

2) Jones earns more than mason.

3) Policeman earns more than druggist and grocer.

4) Policeman does not have druggist as a neighbour.

5) Butcher goes to his work by walk.

6) Policeman does not meet the grocer until he arrests him for exceeding the speed limit.

7) Clark beats Smith every time at bowling. (8 marks)

Sol: From 1 and 5,

Jones and Clark are not police and butcher because Butcher Walks to his work and also Police have arrested the grocer for his over speed. So Jones and Clark are Druggist & Grocer.

From 1 and 4, Clark is not police, and druggist. So Jones is the Grocer.

From 6, Police meet grocer only one time.

From 7, Smith is a Policeman (since a Policeman meet the druggist frequently)

So Mason is Butcher.

Ans: Jones => Grocer, Clark => Druggist, Smith => Policeman, Mason => Butcher.

8. A person observes that his minute’s hand hours hand coincide every 65 min. Does the watch gain or lose time? If so, how much?

Ans: 5 / 11 minutes gains because every 5 minutes gains for 11 gaps.

9. A women asks the man about weathers. What is the temperature for last five days? She says “I don remember the exact temperature, but the temperature’s product was 12 and they all are different. Find the temperature?

Sol: The product of the temperature is 12. GCM of 12 is, 1,2,3,4,6.

In this case, 4 & 6 can’t come because if such big numbers come, then the product can increase. So the other numbers are1, 2, 3. These are possible. Still we have to find two more temperature. We know that temperature may come in (-) ve value (i.e.) – degree Celsius. So the product of 1, 2, 3 is 6.

Therefore, -2, -1 will add these numbers.

Ans: -2, -1, 1, 2, 3.
