System requirements for VISTA

Here are the official Windows Vista Capable minimum requirements:
  • 800 MHz processor
  • 512 MB RAM
  • 15 GB of free hard-drive space
  • DirectX 9-capable graphics card (An old-school Super VGA graphics card will work, but the graphics and resolution won't be as rich.)
Next, a system called Windows Vista Premium Ready supports all of the main features, including security enhancements and search improvements, as well as having the capacity to run Aero. Here are the Vista Premium Ready minimum requirements:
  • 1 GHz processor
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 15 GB of free hard-drive space
  • DirectX 9 capable graphics card with 128 MB of memory and support for WDDM and Pixel Shader 2.0
The main difference between Capable and Ready is a lot more RAM and I believe Microsoft's recommendation of 1 GB is conservative and a more robust graphics card. A system with an integrated video card sharing system memory is almost certainly not going to cut it.
Bottom line: The more RAM and graphics horsepower you're willing to throw at Vista, the better your customer's experience is likely to be. The Five 'Editions' of Vista

Microsoft is publishing Vista in five versions, which the company calls "editions." Here's a quick look at the functionality and target market of each:
  1. Windows Vista Home Basic: Includes only the core security and usability/search improvements. This the only version that does not include the Aero interface. Basic also omits many of the bells and whistlesýsuch as Windows Photo Gallery, Windows Movie Maker and Windows Media Centerýwhich might compel people to upgrade their OS in the first place.
  2. Windows Vista Home Premium: This is where the bells and whistles begin to kick in. The Aero GUI is included. Also included are all of the Windows Media Center functionality, such as support for watching DVDs, recording TV (similar to TiVo), and the ability to connect to Xbox 360 built-in. My guess: This is the edition most home consumers will choose.
  3. Windows Vista Business: Incorporates several tools to ease connections with corporate and wireless networks. Also includes Microsoft's Windows Defender integrated anti-spyware/malware protection.
  4. Windows Vista Enterprise: Similar to Windows Vista Business, but with the addition of a few business features, including the ability to use Virtual PC Express to run older applications. Another bonus: Subsystem for UNIX-based Applications (SUA), a package for running Unix programs that can be critical when working with certain legacy systems.
  5. Windows Vista Ultimate: Includes all features from all the versions above. Choosing Ultimate means you and your customers won't have to decide between having fun and doing business. Either way, you'll be covered.
How much will these editions cost? Microsoft hasn't said much about pricing. But most analysts expect the prices for the basic editions to be similar to those for WinXP. More specifically, Windows XP Home today retails for $99 for an upgrade copy and $199 for the full version. WinXP Pro is $199 for the upgrade, $299 for the full version. Opting for Windows XP Media Center Edition adds about $25 to the price of XP Pro. Assuming the industry analysts are right, Vista prices won't be too far from these.
