The processes involved to bring a database into full functional mode are
1) Start the instance
2) Mount the database
3) open the database

Starting the instance implies creating the SystemGlobalArea along with initializing and allocating memory for the buffers.

DB Instance is the s/w and memory (ram) that are used to manipulate data in the DB. memory=SGA

A database instance is a combination of background services or programs along with memory buffers ( SGA - System Global Area - It is an area of memory used for database information shared by database users)
