Well sanjay,CAT stands for COMMON APTITUDE TEST.It is an exam conducted to gain entry to the prestiguous MBA in IIM's and other top colleges in India.CAT is held once in a year by IIM.This exam shows the wits and intelligence of students to the extreme and tests there ability. The one who scores better then 70% of the total students writing exam will be given 70 percentile score. There are no marks here only percentile scores.Thousands of people dream of mba through IIM's and sit for the exam. The exam is very competitive and held in month of nov mostly. The exam can be asked in any way ,and no one knows the exact number of questions asked. This exam has also negative marking ,here also no one knows the exact -ve marking but some say its -1 for every 3 wrong answers. The greatness of the exam lies in the unpredictiveness of exam questions and test of mental and logical power. The CAT test enables one to secure admission in almost any prestiguous college in india .Be it symbiosis,NMIMS,FMS etc..More than 50% who get good percentile scores are from experienced people who have 2-6 yrs work exp.CAT tests your mental prowess and enables you to become very fast and intelligent in yoiur daily life. This exam has changed the lives of millions of people as those who go for coaching in these exams learn a lot which can be applied in almost any national and international exam in the world.!!!!!

Thanks Faraz. This is very informative. One more question from my side. If a person gets 93 percentile, what is the chance that he will get into a good MBA instituete? what colleges he can look for? Thanks, Krishna Edited by: sk_kireeti

CAT is a computer Adaptive Test that has to be cleared by candidates willing to do MBA in the IIMs (Indian Institute for Management Studies), and in some of the other prestigious institutions that would accept CAT scores for admission The TEST PATTERN is unstable . Every Year it varies. To an extent , the test pattern can be judged CAT BASIC PATTERN 1.Verbal Ability 2.Reading Comprehension 3.Problem Solving 4.Data Interpretation 5.Logical Reasoning 6.Data Sufficiency 7.Maths Problems Some of the latest test patterns are as follows 2000: Total Questions - 165 Time - 120 minutes Section 1 : 55 Q - Verbal Ability - 15 Q and Reading Comprehension - 40 Q Section 2 : 55 Q - Problem Solving - 55 Q Section 3 : 55 Q - Data Interpretation - 31 Q and Verbal Ability - 24 Q 2001: Total Questions - 150 Time - 120 minutes Section 1 : 50 Q - Verbal Ability - 20 Q and Reading Comprehension - 30 Q Section 2 : 50 Q - Problem Solving - 50 Q Section 3 : 50 Q - Data Interpretation - 31 Q and Logical Reasoning - 19 Q 2002: Total Questions - 150 Time - 120 minutes Section 1 : 50 Q - Data Interpretation - 40 Q and Logical Reasoning - 10 Q Section 2 : 50 Q - Problem Solving - 50 Q Section 3 : 50 Q - Verbal Ability - 25 Q and Reading Comprehension - 25 Q 2003 (re-exam format given): Total Questions - 150 Time - 120 minutes Section 1 : 50 Q - Verbal Ability - 25 Q and Reading Comprehension - 25 Q Section 2 : 50 Q - Data Interpretation - 30 Q and Logical Reasoning - 20 Q Section 3 : 50 Q - Problem Solving 2004: Total Questions - 123 Total marks: 150 Time - 120 minutes Section 1 Data Interpretation: 20Q of 1 mark each Data Sufficiency: 6 Q of 1 mark each Logical Reasoning: 12 Q of 2 marks each Section 2 Math problems: 20 Q of 1 mark each Math problems: 15 Q of 2 marks each Section 3 Verbal Ability: 10 Q of 0.5 marks each Verbal Ability: 14 Q of 1 mark each Verbal Ability: 5 Q of 2 marks each Reading Comprehension: 21 Q of 1 mark each Percentile scoring expresses the rank order of the scores in percentages. The percentile level of a person's score indicates the proportion of the group that scored above and below that individual. When a score falls at the 50th percentile, for example, half scored lower, a score at the 80th percentile indicates that 20 percent scored higher and 80 percent scored lower than the person being evaluated. There is negative marketing in the CAT paper and for every wrong answer a certain score is deducted from your total. The IIMs do not disclose the way they calculate the negative marks for the wrong answers. A good score in the written test is a prerequisite for a student to be called for the group discussion and a personal interview conducted to assess the students, personality and demeanor, with the final selection made on the student's overall performance in the three rounds.

Hi sreevs,
that is a very good idea, every year not less than 1lackh people compete for 1000 (more r less) seat in IIM's and we can not predict how the exam patter will be and which area do they r goin to stress and even how many question will be there. Its better to hav a discussion for such a tough exams reg wizkid
