Can functional testing be a negative testing?

Can functional testing be a negative testing?


This is what they asked me in an interview in HP. Tell me whether i am right or not....
Functional testing can be positive as well as negative testing. what do you say?

Functionality testing is to check for the functional requirements. As you said it may be in a positive way as well as in negative way. Where as negative testing is to check whether it is performing as what it is not supposed to do.

hey negative testing is it to test that the product does not perform what it is not suposed to perform

Functionality Testing can be positive and negative testing.
Negative testing is process by which invalid input is entered to check whether system rejectes the input or not

Ofcourse yes, why not.
Validating the functional reponse of a system when it is subjected to wrong/unwanted input is negetive functional testing.
Behaving fine with stalled data is also a functionality of a system.
