Re: What is Testing - (RTRT /LDRA / ADA / TestBed)

WHY TESTING IS IMPORTANT

To deliver a quality product the software has to be tested.

Earlier when testing was being done by developers itself, lots of serious bugs would remain uncovered which caused many disasters.

Here are some selected facts why testing has to done by Test Engineers:
  • During the 1991 Gulf war, an Iraqi Scud missile hit an American army barrack killing many soldiers. An American Patriot missile could not track & intercept the Scud missile. The reason: a software bug in the Patriot missile.
This incident indicates the care that needs to be taken while
Designing the project and to test it totally to make it error free

  • On June 4,1996, European Space Agency launched the Ariane 5 satellite launch vehicle. Exactly after 40 seconds after lift-off at an altitude of 3700 mts, the launcher exploded and become the ball of fire. The project was uninsured, costed U.S.$500 million. What went wrong? In one of the system , a software exception caused the problem. Due to this the processor was shutdown , and it created a chaos.
This mishap can be attributed due to lack of enough testing. This incident illustrates the dangers associated with leaving some portions of the untested code of the software.
  • The NASA mission path finder landed on Mars on July 4,1997. The mission was successful & lots of important data was being sent to the earth. But after few days the computing system started resetting intermittently and data was not being received from mars.

The field of software is full of such stories which caused due to giving the least importance for Testing.

RTRT--Real-Time Ray-Tracing- IBM Rational product

LDRA- Zero Defect Software Development- Testing tools development

A testbed is a platform for experimentation for large development projects. Testbeds allow for rigorous, transparent and replicable testing of scientific theories, computational tools, and other new technologies.

ADA may be a tool designed especially to test embedded applications

Hi,

TestBed = Testing Documents + Testing Environment

That means pre-requisits for test execusion
