Friends,
Do we need to write Testcases even for Automation testing tools?
I know we have to write Testcases when we go for manual testing. we can use either word or Excel sheet or TD/Quality Center to maintain test cases. But i don't know that are we writing testcases for automated testing as well??????

I am very new to the Testing. Please reply back to my question with more explanation.

Here We are not going to write any test cases for Automation.. In Manual phase it self we need to identify the Regression Test Cases, Based on Regression Suit We can prepare the Test Scripts (Based on using Tools like QTP,WR...)...

Hi..

For Automation testing and all we no need to write the test cases. In automation testing we have to write test sripts only like QTP Automation(VB scripts) and WinRunner(TSL Scripts) etc.,

If we don't write testcases for automated tools, then how can we write Test Script? I mean do we have to read FRS and simply write Testscript ???? I am confused? please explain it.

Hi,

I am also not clear about that. Actually i was previously worked in Automation Frame work. There what we are done. check the SRS document and they give content Model(it's like a application). we have checked both and at last we had some conclusion.
Then starting to write test script. thats way to we have follow.

I will like to share my experience.
I am into testing since last 1.5 years. well i have not done so much of automation.
what we follow in our company is we automate all the Manual Test Cases.
One Test Script is made for Each Test Case document/functionality.
SO we use Test Cases which are made for manual Testing.

if manual test case there means no problem to make test script and all. you already know the manual process of application. For that you can make test script easily. one more suggestion login page and all you can use same test scripts. Actually which automation tool you are using?

Hi Senthil,

Test cases are made referring USE case docs. it is not necessary you have access to the application at time of writing test cases. So we know the flow of events which would take place from use cases and write Test cases.
We just follow the Test case and automate the process step by step with whatever test cases can be automated.

My Scenario was newly create Automation Frame work script .so we have to check requirement and for that we have to create scripts. For your scenario no problem, you have manual test case so you have to follow the same for automation scripts.

As per my research on this, it differs from company to company. Test Scripts can either be written by using Manual TestCases OR Test Scripts can be written by looking into FSD/SRS( in this case, we don't have any test cases).
