How to find duplicate issues from the issue list?

Hi,

How can we that, the issue which is logging by us is a new one and not a duplicate of any other issue which is already logged in Tested modules of a project by different people.

Re: How to find duplicate issues from the issue list?

Yes, I know that thru, defect tracking we can find the duplicate issues.

But for example, I have 5000 issues, out of which i want to find duplicate issue, How can I do that?

I think I can find the duplicate, By sorting and filtering according to its Bug type, severity, priority etc..,
In this instance also, what i have to do, if I left still with 1000 issues in Tracker.

Shall i have do the remaining sorting part through manual or still there is any process to find.

Shireendra,

There is no foolproof method to achieve it. Manual efforts are always necessary.

Thanks,
Krishna

Re: How to find duplicate issues from the issue list?

Shireendra & Anand,

There are more than 1 way to achieve this. What suites you, depends on your position and urgency.

Way 1-
Search the bug data base with the help of either subject line provided while logging the bug (I don't think sorting by seviority will not help as each tester will see it in different ways depending on the functionality they are testing). Then look at the subject lines manually and then if you feel any subject line is near to your issue, open it and go through the details to confirm it.

But the bug logging guide lines may not be same by everyone. Some may include form techincal name (file name) or some may use the form window name and so on... the chances of getting the result is only 60% and takes lot of time.

Way 2-
Talk to you peers and ask them if they have logged any bug for that issue. If anyone have logged, then there is 95% possibility that they remember it and many cases they can probably tell you the subject line with which we can search to get that bug. Then search with the subject keyword and filer name.

But, if the bug is logged by a person from other QA teams (can happen some times especially in load testing, performance testing phases as they are done by different team in a regular big companies), then we can't get that information. But the advantage is, you will get quick responses within the team.

Way 3-
If you know the developer who handles the particular form or functionality or feature and if he is approachable, talk to him directly and enquire if any bug is logged by anyone earlier on that issue.

Because he fixed the issue by taking pain, he/she will remember it for sure and should be able to answer you. But, if the issue is very old, there are chances they he might have forgot it.

Thanks,
Krishna

Re: How to find duplicate issues from the issue list?

Krishna,

All the ways are perfect. But most of times in my case I got suceeded in way 3 only.

I faced these instances, when I used to take charge of any project from the middle face of it. In these situations, First i used to conduct a formal meeting with my Testing team and development team, and I used to enquire about the Critical and major issues logged and fixed by them.

It has helped me alot to reduce the bug density in both ways like, decrease of duplicate bugs and also taking care with development team in these instances for non replicating of those kind issues.

Once again
Thx to ANAND and KRISHNA
Keep going....Good work
